>>Teddies for Tibetans

Over the course of the summer, a few hundred Teddy Bears were taken out to Nepal for young Tibetan refugees at the Tibetan Refugee Centre. New arrivals were given a teddy bear to welcome them to the TRC in Kathmandu. Teddys and other toys can really help as an item of comfort for children who have been separated from their parents. The kids have been delighted with them, and I’m sure we will continue this scheme in the coming year.
We are hoping to expand on the scheme by firstly continuing to send out Teddy Bears, but also to donate other things, especially clothes to the TRC. At the TRC, there is always a need for more clothing - often, the children had to wear the same clothes for a week. This is obviously not ideal from a hygiene point of view, especially as there were big problems with bedbugs and mosquitoes, and some of the kids got fleas and other parasites. I’m sure changing their clothes more often would help this, but with so few clothes available, this is impossible. I took a load of clothes over, but of course, this didn’t even scratch the surface of the problem. We all have old clothes we don’t need, and if anyone goes to Nepal or India, or knows anyone going to these countries, we should encourage them to take old clothes out to the Tibetan Refugee Centres in Kathmandu and Dharmashala. We can even ask clothes stores, toy shops etc. if they will contribute and help us send things out.
