>Introduction
In September 2004, when the founding members of the society began studying at Leeds, there seemed limited knowledge of Tibet and the issues affecting it's people. Unforunately, there is a great deal of apathy towards the situation, largely as people do not understand what is going on- we hope to conquer this apathy. As such, Luke, Steve & Julian decided to set up the LUU Free Tibet Soc, and it was launched in September 2005. LUU Free Tibet Soc is an independent Tibet support group, in that we are not a member of any of the larger 'umbrella' Tibet Support Groups. Quite simply- we stand for the rights of Tibetans; their human rights, political and religious freedoms, and the right to self determination. We wish to work with all Tibet Support Groups, but operate separately and do not get involved with any ideological differences. Hopefully we have already raised Tibet's profile within Leeds University, and we aim to continue doing so, and spread knowledge of Tibet throughout the student community and Leeds in general. We owe particular thanks to the Leeds University Union, who have been of great assistance to us, and provided us with extremely generous funding in 2006. Additionally, we would like to thank Students for a Free Tibet for the help they offer, and we hope to continue working with them in the future.
>Our Aims
The main aim of our society is quite simple- to create a greater awareness of Tibet and the difficulties it's people face as a result of the Chinese occupation. We hope to get more people interested in Tibetan culture & religion in the belief that a lot can be learned from the Tibetan people. A great risk is posed to their way of life and a greater effort is required to preserve it.
>Objectives of the Society:
1) Campaigning against human rights abuses against Tibetans.
